DuDuClaw autonomous evolution engine technical documentation
Version: v2.0 (prediction-driven + GVU self-play) + v3 addendum (AEE / playbook, 2026-08-06) Date: 2026-03-29 (v3 addendum: 2026-08-06) Status: Production — 197 tests passing (v2.0 baseline); see chapter 12 for v3 AEE
Read this before the rest of the document (v3 status): the “GVU rewrites SOUL.md directly” flow described in chapter 4 has been a non-default escape-hatch path since v3 (2026-08-06) — it only activates when agent.toml [evolution] legacy_soul_evolution = true is set. The default path is now AEE: SOUL.md becomes read-only for the agent (the persona layer is still industry consensus, it just no longer gets rewritten wholesale by an LLM), and the destination for evolution is the playbook entry model described in chapter 12. The GVU narrative in chapters 4, 7, 8, and 9 (4-layer verification, 24h observation period, append-only writes) still applies unchanged when legacy_soul_evolution = true, plus this round’s stop-the-bleeding fixes (cap deadlock release, observation-window quality gate, judge ordering fix, per-agent cooldown, stagnation detection, symmetric threshold recovery). The AEE path is covered separately in chapter 12; fixes shared by both paths are underlined. Full design: commercial/docs/DESIGN-evolution-v3-aee.md; planning and root-cause forensics: commercial/docs/TODO-evolution-v3-2026-08.md; user-facing walkthrough: docs/features/38-aee-playbook-evolution.md; switch details: docs/guides/evolution-switches.md.

1. Architecture overview
Section titled “1. Architecture overview”The autonomous evolution engine lets an agent automatically modify its own personality profile (SOUL.md) based on real conversation performance. The system is driven by prediction error rather than a fixed-interval timer, keeping roughly 90% of conversations at zero LLM cost.

Design philosophy
Section titled “2. Design philosophy”| Principle | Implementation |
|---|---|
| Reflect only on error | Zero cost when prediction error < 0.2 — no wasted API tokens |
| Self-calibration | MetaCognition automatically adjusts threshold boundaries every 100 predictions |
| Safety first | 4-layer verification (3 zero-cost + 1 LLM) + contract boundaries + atomic writes |
| Rollback capable | Every change gets a 24h observation period; metric regressions trigger automatic rollback |
| XML isolation | All untrusted content is wrapped in XML tags to prevent prompt injection |
| Encrypted storage | Rollback diffs are AES-256-GCM encrypted and stored outside the agent directory |

Section titled “3.4 Satisfaction inference formula”Actual satisfaction can’t be measured directly, so it’s inferred from behavioral signals:
inferred = 0.7 // Baseline (neutral) - corrections × 0.3 // -0.3 per correction - max(0, follow_ups - 1) × 0.1 // -0.1 for repeated follow-ups ± feedback_signal // Positive +0.2~0.4 / negative -0.2~0.4inferred = clamp(inferred, 0.0, 1.0)3.5 Composite error calculation
Section titled “3.5 Composite error calculation”composite_error = 0.40 × |delta_satisfaction| + 0.20 × topic_surprise + 0.20 × (unexpected_correction ? 1.0 : 0.0) + 0.20 × (unexpected_follow_up ? 1.0 : 0.0)composite_error = clamp(composite_error, 0.0, 1.0)Topic surprise uses Jaccard distance and supports both languages:
- ASCII: whitespace tokenized, filters tokens ≤ 2 characters
- CJK: character bigrams
- Takes the maximum of the two
3.6 UserModel (Welford online statistics)
Section titled “3.6 UserModel (Welford online statistics)”Each (user_id, agent_id) pair maintains its own statistical model:
pub struct UserModel { pub preferred_response_length: RunningStats, pub avg_satisfaction: RunningStats, pub topic_distribution: HashMap<String, f64>, pub active_hours: [f64; 24], pub correction_rate: RunningStats, pub follow_up_rate: RunningStats, pub language_preference: LanguageStats, pub total_conversations: u64,}Welford’s online algorithm (incremental mean/variance):
push(x): count += 1 delta = x - mean mean += delta / count delta2 = x - mean m2 += delta × delta2
variance = m2 / countConfidence: min(total_conversations, 50) / 50 — full confidence at 50 conversations.
3.7 ConversationMetrics extraction
Section titled “3.7 ConversationMetrics extraction”A pure function — no LLM, no I/O:
pub struct ConversationMetrics { pub message_count: u32, pub user_message_count: u32, pub assistant_message_count: u32, pub avg_assistant_response_length: f64, pub user_follow_ups: u32, pub user_corrections: u32, pub detected_language: String, // "zh" or "en" pub extracted_topics: Vec<String>, // top 5 keywords pub feedback_signal: Option<String>, // ...}Correction detection (bilingual pattern matching):
- Chinese: 不是、錯了、不對、重來、不要、修改
- English: not what i, that’s wrong, no, , incorrect, please fix, try again
Follow-up detection: 3-message sliding window, short message (< 50 characters) or containing ? / ?

Section titled “3.9 MetaCognition adaptive thresholds”Every 100 predictions, the thresholds are automatically evaluated and adjusted:
pub struct AdaptiveThresholds { pub negligible_upper: f64, // Default 0.2, range [0.1, 0.4] pub moderate_upper: f64, // Default 0.5, range [0.2, 0.85] pub significant_upper: f64, // Default 0.8, range [0.4, 0.95]}Adjustment logic:
sig_improvement_rate = recent_positive / recent_total (sliding window of 50)
if sig_improvement_rate < 30% AND samples ≥ 5: moderate_upper += 0.05 // Lower sensitivity (too many triggers, not useful)
if sig_improvement_rate > 70% AND samples ≥ 5: moderate_upper -= 0.03 // Raise sensitivity (triggers are effective)
if critical_proportion > 20%: significant_upper -= 0.05 // Tighten the Critical threshold

|---|---|---|
| L1 | 0 | String matching + regex |
| L2 | 0 | SQLite query + Jaccard |

4.5 Updater (apply + observe + rollback)
Section titled “4.5 Updater (apply + observe + rollback)”Atomic write pattern
Section titled “Atomic write pattern”1. Read the current SOUL.md → store as rollback_diff (encrypted)2. Build the new SOUL.md = current content + "\n\n" + proposed_changes3. Validate: non-empty, ≤ 50KB4. Write to a temp file SOUL.md.gvu_tmp5. Record the version to SQLite (delete the temp file on failure; SOUL.md stays unchanged)6. Atomically rename tmp → SOUL.md7. Update the soul_guard SHA-256 fingerprintKey design decision: always append, never overwrite/replace — this prevents truncation attacks.
Observation-period determination
Section titled “Observation-period determination”Metrics are checked after 24 hours by default:
| Condition | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Conversation count < 5 | ExtendObservation(12h) |
| Feedback ratio dropped > 3% | Rollback |
| Prediction error rose > 5% | Rollback |
| Contract violations increased | Rollback |
| None of the above | Confirm |
Rollback execution
Section titled “Rollback execution”Uses the same atomic pattern as applying a change: write tmp → rename → update fingerprint → mark RolledBack.

Section titled “5. Integration points”5.1 Channel reply handler
Section titled “5.1 Channel reply handler”Location: crates/duduclaw-gateway/src/channel_reply.rs
After every user conversation ends, the following runs in a background tokio::spawn:
1. predict() → statistical prediction (< 1ms)2. extract() → extract conversation metrics3. calculate_error() → compute prediction error4. update_model() → update the user model5. diagnose() → skill lifecycle diagnosis6. route() → route to an evolution action7. gvu.run() → run the GVU loop if triggered8. metacognition → feed the result back5.2 Heartbeat scheduler — silence breaker
Section titled “5.2 Heartbeat scheduler — silence breaker”Location: crates/duduclaw-agent/src/heartbeat.rs
The scheduler checks every 30 seconds. For each agent:
- If no evolution has fired within
max_silence_hours(default 12h), it logs a warning and resets the timestamp - Normal heartbeat: processes pending bus_queue messages
if hours_since_last > agent.max_silence_hours { warn!("Silence breaker: no evolution trigger for too long"); agent.last_evolution_trigger = Some(now);}5.3 CONTRACT.toml
Section titled “5.3 CONTRACT.toml”Location: crates/duduclaw-agent/src/contract.rs
[boundaries]must_not = ["reveal api keys", "execute rm -rf"]must_always = ["respond in zh-TW", "refuse harmful requests"]max_tool_calls_per_turn = 10The L1 verifier enforces these boundaries against the simulated final SOUL.md.
5.4 Soul Guard (integrity protection)
Section titled “5.4 Soul Guard (integrity protection)”Location: crates/duduclaw-security/src/soul_guard.rs
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| SHA-256 fingerprint | Computed for SOUL.md at boot and on each heartbeat |
| Separate storage | The hash is stored at ~/.duduclaw/soul_hashes/<agent>.hash, outside the agent directory |
| Drift detection | A CRITICAL-level security alert fires when the fingerprint doesn’t match |
| Version backups | .soul_history/SOUL_<timestamp>.md, up to 10 versions |
| Accepting a change | accept_soul_change() is called once the GVU Updater successfully applies a change |
6. Security mechanisms
Section titled “6. Security mechanisms”6.1 Prompt injection defense
Section titled “6.1 Prompt injection defense”| Mechanism | Description |
|---|---|
| XML tag isolation | <soul_content>, <trigger_context>, <proposed_changes> |
| Data-only markers | Each tag is followed by an explicit “this is data, not instructions” statement |
| Closing-tag escaping | Case-insensitive replacement of </tag> → </tag> |
| Unicode safety | Correctly handles multi-byte character byte offsets (İ, ẞ, etc.) |
6.2 Contract enforcement
Section titled “6.2 Contract enforcement”must_not: case-insensitive substring search, validated against the simulated final SOUL.mdmust_always: confirms all required patterns are present in the final SOUL.md- Enforced at the L1 layer — zero LLM cost, zero latency, cannot be bypassed
6.3 Encryption
Section titled “6.3 Encryption”- rollback_diff: AES-256-GCM (
CryptoEngine, shared with API key encryption) - Version records: SQLite WAL mode + busy_timeout=5000
- Backward compatibility: stored as plaintext when no encryption key is configured; decryption failures degrade gracefully

12. AEE — Agentic Evolution Engine (v3 default path)
Section titled “12. AEE — Agentic Evolution Engine (v3 default path)”Landed: 2026-08-06. Full design (including the field-by-field gene schema, the complete Gate/Measure list, and the Generator inner-loop prompt assembly) is in
commercial/docs/DESIGN-evolution-v3-aee.mdchapters 1-3; root-cause forensics and work-package breakdown are incommercial/docs/TODO-evolution-v3-2026-08.md.
12.0 One-sentence framing
Section titled “12.0 One-sentence framing”The GVU loop from chapter 4 hasn’t been deprecated — the Generator→Verifier→Updater three-step framework is unchanged. What changed is the object the loop operates on: instead of the whole SOUL.md, it’s now playbook entries. When legacy_soul_evolution = true, chapter 4 applies exactly as written. By default (false), the Generator/Verifier/Updater roles from chapter 4 are taken over by this chapter’s gvu/aee/ submodule.
12.1 Why the shift from SOUL.md to playbook (diagnostic findings)
Section titled “12.1 Why the shift from SOUL.md to playbook (diagnostic findings)”Empirical forensics across three installation windows (windows A/B/C) found that GVU was being strangled by its own guardrails and deadlocks, not that it was incapable of evolving: gvu_enabled had two contradictory defaults (R3), the append-only write mode formed a permanent one-way-valve deadlock once SOUL.md exceeded the cap (R2), the observation window unconditionally confirmed when conversation count was insufficient — leaving post_metrics at all zeros while marking the change as verified (R5), and channel paths bypassed the throttle gate to burn through six GVU runs back-to-back (R4). These are the issues fixed by this round’s stop-the-bleeding work (see CHANGELOG Phase 0).
But the deeper rationale comes from industry trend research: the “LLM self-reflects, then rewrites the whole file” pattern is itself being phased out. ACE (ICLR 2026, arXiv:2510.04618) documented context collapse — 18,282 tokens collapsing to 122 in one step, with accuracy regressing rather than improving. Anthropic’s official memory API explicitly recommends “many small focused files, not a few large ones.” Letta (MemGPT’s successor) no longer lets the main agent edit its own core memory. The persona file itself hasn’t been phased out (OpenClaw, Claude Code, and Anthropic Skills all keep this layer) — what’s being phased out is the ability for an LLM to rewrite it wholesale, which also happens to be the largest attack surface (an ideal target for persistent prompt injection). So v3’s direction is: SOUL.md becomes read-only for the agent, and the destination for evolution shifts to expanding the existing rule lifecycle (already an ACE-style prototype with a helpful/harmful net score) into a full playbook.
12.2 Four-layer separation (persona / experience / knowledge / skill)
Section titled “12.2 Four-layer separation (persona / experience / knowledge / skill)”L0 Persona layer SOUL.md ──────────── read-only for agent/AEE/GVU; only operator/dashboard can edit (or a single agent can self-write with explicit can_modify_own_soul = true)L1 Experience layer Playbook (new) ────── evolution's landing destination, the subject of this chapterL2 Knowledge layer memory + wiki ─────── unchanged (existing temporal supersession / origin binding mechanisms)L3 Skill layer skills ────────────── unchanged (existing skill synthesis/graduation)SOUL.md’s read-only enforcement is implemented at two points: the MCP front door (agent_update_soul) and the Write/Edit/Bash file-protect hook, both of which intercept an “AI employee identity” caller writing to its own or another agent’s SOUL.md; the operator/dashboard path is unaffected. See the CHANGELOG entry “SOUL.md persona layer made read-only for AI employees” and DESIGN-evolution-v3-aee.md §1.9 for details.
12.3 Playbook entry schema (gene-shaped)
Section titled “12.3 Playbook entry schema (gene-shaped)”Module: crates/duduclaw-gateway/src/playbook/ (entry.rs / delta.rs /
dedup.rs / signals.rs / select.rs / store.rs / sweep.rs / gene.rs).
No new table is created — this extends the metadata of the existing
rule_lifecycle (semantic memory entries); the storage engine is still
SqliteMemoryEngine. The entry structure references the schema concept
of EvoMap/evolver’s GEP (Genome Evolution Protocol) — only the JSON shape is
referenced, not its code (evolver is GPL-3.0-or-later and its core engine is
distributed obfuscated, so its supply chain isn’t auditable):
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
category |
repair / optimize / innovate |
signals_match |
Trigger signal vocabulary (wired to MistakeCategory / FailureReason) |
content |
Compact natural language, ≤400 characters (arXiv:2604.15097 found that expanding entries into full documents actually reduces effectiveness) |
eval_cases |
Linked EvalCaseRef entries (suite + case id); ≥1 is mandatory — entries with none are refused at write time |
failure_history |
Failure history (FailureNote) |
applications |
Capsule-style application records (outcome/score) |
success_streak |
Consecutive-success count, one basis for promotion |
derived_from |
Lineage (mistake id / GVU proposal id / operator) |
state |
probation / active / stale / retired (built on the existing Janus probation base) |
Deterministic delta merging (delta.rs, non-LLM, operating on Add/Update/Retire etc.) plus write-time validation (fail-closed: missing schema fields, an over-long content, or empty eval_cases are all rejected). Deduplication (dedup.rs): character n-gram cosine similarity, NEAR_DUP_COSINE = 0.92 (deliberately conservative — DESIGN-evolution-v3-aee.md §1.6 takes the position that “a false merge silently loses a distinct rule, which is worse than keeping one redundant entry”); a hit is rejected with an audit record, never silently dropped. Capacity and lifecycle (sweep.rs): a per-agent capacity cap plus stale/archive handling (reuses the existing Ebbinghaus retrievability calculation rather than inventing a new decay formula, and never hard-deletes).
12.4 Injection channel: signal match first, score fills the rest
Section titled “12.4 Injection channel: signal match first, score fills the rest”select.rs upgrades the selection logic for “## Learned Rules” from a static
top-3-by-net-score list to: first match the current error pattern /
FailureReason / conversation keywords against each entry’s signals_match,
inject the hits first, and fill any remaining slots by the existing
net-score ranking. The token budget is still bound by the
prompt_compression pipeline, and only content is injected — audit fields
such as applications never enter the prompt.
12.5 The AEE loop: one round, end to end
Section titled “12.5 The AEE loop: one round, end to end”Module: crates/duduclaw-gateway/src/gvu/aee/ (intent.rs / prompt.rs /
snapshot.rs / inner_loop.rs / eval_scorer.rs / settle.rs /
pending.rs / run.rs). It lives under gvu/ rather than at the top level
of a standalone aee/ crate on purpose: AEE is an internal mechanism of the
GVU loop, sharing the champion / verifier_gate / verifier_measure /
stagnation / telemetry / version_store sibling modules with gvu.
round_seq += 1 → decide intent (intent.rs, §12.5.1, deterministic, zero LLM) → Skip (no material) is logged honestly rather than forced → champion bootstrap (champion.rs) — scores the "current" playbook as a whole once → Generator inner loop, ≤3 rounds (inner_loop.rs, §12.5.2) generate → gate (zero LLM) → shadow-apply → score → revise if unsatisfied → full Measure vs. champion (verifier_measure.rs) + three anti-drift companions → commit gate: matches-or-improves (champion.rs commit_verdict) → pass → land via playbook::store::apply_deltas → entry-level observation windows are queued (pending.rs); settle.rs accepts/rolls back each entry on expiry → telemetry throughout (telemetry.rs, WP0.6)Nothing lands during the inner loop — only the final commit step touches
SQLite; a round the inner loop abandons leaves the playbook byte-for-byte
unchanged (except failure_history, which deliberately keeps the lesson
learned that round). AEE never writes SOUL.md — the whole-file
compression path for a SOUL.md over its cap goes through chapter 4’s WP0.2
consolidate path, orthogonal to the AEE loop; the two share only the same
cooldown.
12.5.1 Strategy mix (GEP G4, replacing bare epsilon exploration)
Section titled “12.5.1 Strategy mix (GEP G4, replacing bare epsilon exploration)”agent.toml [evolution] strategy (balanced default / innovate / harden /
repair_only) determines each round’s mix of repair (working through the
MistakeNotebook), optimize (refining entries with a low success_streak),
and innovate (exploring new entries); the exact ratios and the fallback
behavior for an unrecognized value are documented in
docs/guides/evolution-switches.md under “Strategy mix.”
12.5.2 Gate/Measure separation (replacing the old 8-layer all-veto chain)
Section titled “12.5.2 Gate/Measure separation (replacing the old 8-layer all-veto chain)”Chapter 4’s L1-L4 shared a common flaw (R6): any single layer vetoing killed the whole candidate, including layers built on heuristic thresholds that were never calibrated (L2’s 0.5 Jaccard, L3’s 0.7 judge score). AEE splits “deterministic, zero-cost, genuinely deserves veto power” from “quality judgment, should be a score rather than a veto”:
| Layer | Module | Checks | Has veto power? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gate | verifier_gate.rs |
G-Safety (killswitch/human-override/identity rewrite), G-Contract (must_not/must_always/sensitive patterns/size), G-Canary-Static (literal instructions that would break the canary), G-Schema (playbook write validation), G-Capacity (capacity reporting, doesn’t itself reject) |
Yes, zero LLM |
| Measure | verifier_measure.rs |
cases (eval case pass rate), judge (the old L3, downgraded to a single score dimension — a failed call is recorded as None, not 0.0), anti_sycophancy, novelty (the old L2 similarity veto, converted to a score), relevance (the old L2.5 mistake relevance) |
No — the only way to zero out the entire score vector is hitting must_not in a case’s actual response after passing Gate (MeasureVector::zeroed) |
The order was also corrected: Gate runs first (zero cost), so a candidate that’s doomed anyway doesn’t burn the judge’s LLM cost first (decision B2, DESIGN-evolution-v3-aee.md §2.5.2).
v1.53 added two more checks in the Gate family:
- G-Assertions (WP2.8,
inner_loop.rsstep b2): every new entry must carry E1 assertions (must_use_tools/must_not_use_tools/output_contains/output_not_contains, ≤6 items, ≤80 characters each; schema inplaybook/entry.rs, replayer inplaybook/assertions.rs) that are replayed with zero LLM cost against a recorded eval transcript, vetoing on any violation; when no replayable recording exists it degrades to advisory — honestly flagged as “unverified” rather than faked as verified. - Anti-reward-hacking audit (WP2.10 / plan item C4,
gvu/reward_hack.rs): three signature classes — H1 eval-question leakage (n-gram overlap ≥0.6, effectively memorizing the answer), H2 tautologies, and H3 failure-suppression — are folded into theG-Contractveto family (decision D11: no new layer); H4 judge-pleasing phrasing is Measure-side telemetry only, never a veto, to avoid falsely rejecting legitimate entries.
12.5.3 Champion and the commit gate (matches-or-improves)
Section titled “12.5.3 Champion and the commit gate (matches-or-improves)”champion.rs: the champion is a snapshot of the entire playbook (the
SHA-256 of all active/probation entries’ dedup_keys in sorted order), not an
entry-by-entry comparison — comparing entry-by-entry would let a candidate
that “improves one entry while quietly wrecking three others” look like
progress. The commit gate (AVO P7) compares each dimension of the candidate
against the champion; falling within the [evolution.noise_band] noise band
counts as a tie (Matches), and ties are still committable (otherwise
evolution would get stuck at a local optimum) — hence the three anti-drift
companions: cumulative drift detection, held-out rotation, and the
observation window.
12.5.4 Entry-level observation window (replacing the whole-file 24h window)
Section titled “12.5.4 Entry-level observation window (replacing the whole-file 24h window)”settle.rs + pending.rs: the observation-window verdict is now determined
at entry granularity — each entry’s confirm/rollback is decided by its own
linked eval case, with an observation length of
agent.toml [evolution] aee_settle_hours (default 24h, capped at 30 days).
Only the entry that regressed gets rolled back; the rest of the batch is
unaffected — this is the biggest behavioral difference from chapter 4’s
“confirm/rollback the whole SOUL.md together.”
12.6 What’s not yet implemented (later waves of the same plan)
Section titled “12.6 What’s not yet implemented (later waves of the same plan)”Two items from the same plan’s Phase 2 in TODO-evolution-v3-2026-08.md are
still pending — not silently dropped, just scheduled for a later wave (C4,
the anti-reward-hacking audit that used to be listed here, landed in v1.53;
see §12.5.2):
- C1 hypothesis objects: making each round’s evolutionary intent explicit as a falsifiable hypothesis (statement/evidence/confidence/lineage), replacing the observation window’s fuzzy statistical verdict.
- C3 refactor-toward-simplicity: periodically compressing the playbook toward a more concise abstraction (decision on direction: deterministic compression only, no LLM-driven wholesale refactor).
12.7 Configuration overview
Section titled “12.7 Configuration overview”[evolution]gvu_enabled = false # Opt-in, covers both the AEE and legacy pathsgvu_cooldown_minutes = 60 # Per agent, covers all trigger pathslegacy_soul_evolution = false # true → use chapter 4's legacy SOUL.md pathaee_settle_hours = 24 # AEE entry observation window, capped at 30 daysstrategy = "balanced" # balanced | innovate | harden | repair_only

GEP-gene-shaped JSON to a local file, no external hub); duduclaw playbook migrate-soul --agent <id> [--apply] (WP1.4 — extracts behavior rules from a
legacy SOUL.md into draft playbook entries for human review before --apply);
duduclaw eval-scaffold --agent <id> (drafts eval cases from an agent’s SOUL
behavior rules into evals-drafts/, the free-tier entry point for the
“entries must link an eval case” hard requirement); duduclaw eval gained
--case/--exclude-dir/--report, and --record recording now goes through
a temporary .mcp.json copy (DUDUCLAW_HOME pointed at the eval home,
DUDUCLAW_MCP_API_KEY=eval-local — recording has zero side effects on
production and keys never enter the transcript) (see
docs/guides/evals.md).
